This mare arrived back to our local charity not for the first time, it seems her lameness could not be managed despite receiving information from the previous owners that her hooves had been fixed.

I checked in on her when she arrived and was curious to see her hooves and what shoeing application had been used as I hadn’t the chance to previously shoe her.

To my surprise she was barefoot and crippled lame with a large horizontal hoof crack. Had the hooves been seen by a farrier at all.

Plan of action

Remove the toe and check for an abscess. But realising the hoof would become unstable after an aggressive trim we decided to sedate her and go for the rocker Glushu approach.

She was comfortable and starting to slowly recover.

We had a setback when she moved farms and missed an appointment with me

But that’s another story altogether

5 months on we are managing to shoe her without sedation and she is walking better than ever and her mood has improved now she isn’t in pain.

I will visit every 4 weeks to replace one side at a time, her patience just about lasts the hour appointment. ”
